Burton, Sir Richard Francis

Burton, Sir Richard Francis
(1821-1890)
Burton studied at Trinity College, Oxford, became a talented linguist and had a colorful life: intrepid traveler, linguist, scholar, soldier, anthropologist, and a prolific and gifted writer. He published 43 volumes on his explorations and almost 30 volumes of translations, including the unexpurgated translations of the Kama Sutra (1883) and The Arabian Nights (1885-1888). He was the first European to discover Lake Tanganyika. He also entered the forbidden Muslim cities of Mecca and Medina. He mapped new trade routes, identified and catalogued valuable natural resources, and analyzed the political, religious, and economic systems in foreign countries. His City of the Saints (1861) is an account of the Mormon settlement at Utah. Some of his poems: "An Unpraised Picture," "Black Sheep," "Extras," "In Sleep," "Love is Strong," "On a Ferry Boat," "The First Song," "The Forefather," "The Glorious Game," "The Polar Quest."
